Double System Boot W/O 2 OS Boot Screen
When I Boot up my old system win98SE (which I just restored with a Ghost Image) I now see a screen asking me which OS to boot to-- windows 98 or XP. Since I don't have XP installed on this computer. I would like my boot program to skip this . My Boot.ini file looks like this [Boot Loader]
Timeout=5 Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT [Operating Systems] C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Setup" C:\="Microsoft Windows" I was thinking I could change to [Boot Loader] Timeout=5 Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT [Operating Systems] C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows" What do you think? Thanks GENE |

If all you need is the primary O/S (which I'm assuming is 98SE), it should be safe just to delete the boot.ini file. The boot file is only needed when you have multiple O/S's installed on your system.
If you don't want to delete it right off the bat, just rename it. ie old_boot.ini or boot.bak If that achieves the desired results, say goodbye to the boot.ini

If I understand you correctly, you have a computer running Windows 98 that offers you a choice between booting to Win98 and Windows XP, even though the latter is not installed on your system, and you wish to do away with this monstrosity.
Try this: While in Windows 98, create a boot disk (Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Startup Disk) and use it to boot the system. You need to set the BIOS boot order to boot from floppy first. While you are in the BIOS, also ascertain that Boot Sector Virus Protection has been disabled. If it is enabed, it will interfere in what you are about to do next. Once the system has booted to the floppy, you will have a prompt on the screen that says A:\> or thereabouts (It will be A:\ at least). Once you have arrived at this prompt, type FDISK /MBR and press ENTER. Reboot the system if it does not ask you to do so, and you should now have a system that boots solely to Windows 98. Once the system has booted to Windows 98 and you have confirmed that that is what you want, it would be wiser to enter the BIOS again and set boot order to HDD first (HDD0), since this will save a little on boot time and wil protect against possible boot sector infections form floppy disks present in the drive during boot-up.

If you don't have a Win98 boot disk,
In windows98 go to control panel, add/remove programs, then startup tab. create a win98 boot floppy disk. Now restart the computer boot from the boot disk. at the A: prompt, type sys c: this will transfer windows 98 or msdos files to the c: drive. Boot into win98 delete the following hidden files: nt*.* bootsect.dos Pagefile.sys Boot.ini you can also delete the winnt folder or which ever folder you installed the other OS into. |

sorry to hear you are still having troubles.
You could go here and download bootdisk files for Win9x. http://www.bootdisk.com/ it will be an *.exe and it will create a floppy bootdisk for you. good luck......... |

Which brings up the question of how exactly your problem started ie. what exactly were you trying to do that resulted in what is happening now?
By the way the bootdisk you want is the one in this link here: http://www.24by7.ca/files/boot98se.exe Download it and run it with formatted floppy disk in drive a:. It will create a bootdisk for you. Then do as suggested above (in previous posts). |

It makes the C: a system disk and bootable.
