Windows ME Problem

I have a cousin who is having a problem on his Windows ME machine. He installed Kazaa, and then he un-installed it and rebooted. Now, when he boots, it loads partially into Windows, but the taskbar doesn't load, just a grey screen. He can Ctrl+Alt+Del. Safe Mode does the same thing. This is a toughie for me, because I've never used ME, and I'm trying to help him over AIM. Any help would be appreciated.

Have him try to restore it to a time before he loaded Kazaa.

. . . following up on Roger's idea - if he can't get to Safe Mode via the hard drive, see if he has his WinMe disk handy - he can boot from that. . .

If he can't get to Safe Mode at all, try the scanreg/restore from a command prompt (booting with the WinMe disk, or if you can get the boot menu by pressing the CTL keys at startup)

Did he download anything with Kazaa before uninstalling it? I have used Kazaa many times and I have actually downloaded a virus or two before using them.
