No icons on desktop

my client have a compaq presario, with windows 98 on it. he told me that he did a defrag on his harddrive yesterday, then left to go home when he came back in and booted up the pc, the only thing it was do is show the background wallpapaer, no icon would appear on his desktop, the welcome sound come on, so I assume the bootup process is complete, and it did the same thing in safemode, I went to dos and did scanreg /fix, it said that the registry was fixed but it didn't fix the problem of him not seeing his desktop icons. any suggestions

Go to Microsoft and downlad Tweakui(Microsoft powertoys) ,in it is an option to fix and repair icons,it's free and it usually works.

What happens if you hit the WIN key on the keyboard? If you right click on the desktop, does the menu pop up?

. . . and if el_novato's suggestion to right-click on the desktop brings up a menu, choose "Properties", go to the "Effects" tab, and if there is a checkmark in the "Hide icons when the desktop is viewed as a webpage" option box, remove the checkmark.

If that isn't it, and if Active Desktop is not enabled, instead of scanreg/fix, try for a saved Registry from before his defrag with the scanreg/restore command.

See how that goes
