xp pro and freezing/hiccuping

I did a search and could not find any threads with this topic, I apologize if one exists.

I have Windows XP Professional edition running on a abit nf7-s motherboard. The cpu is a barton 2500+ (OCed to above 3200+ speeds). I got a gig of corsair 3200 in this rig too. Before I start: this problem has existed before OCing the cpu. It also existed with two different brands of ram, so I conclude it has nothing to do with cpu or ram. That narrows it down to strictly the OS or mobo. Anyways the problem:

My XP temporarily freezes for maybe a minut at times. There is nothing I can do to make this happen, it seems random. When it freezes I can move the mouse around, and programs running still run (ie. winamp still plays music). If I click on something such as a desktop icon while it is "frozen" the icon will execute after my comp decides to unfreeze. Whilst frozen I can still bring up the task manager and terminate programs at will, but they wont shut down until my computer is done "freezing". So the best way to describe this is a "hiccup". It tends to do this after closing a window (internet or folder) but that si not the only time it will happen. Does anyone have any ideas about why and how to fix?

When you are running your computer, and it hiccups on you, try to see what programs are running .. see if you can establish a pattern. Or try shutting down all start-up services and see what is taking up so much of your system's attention.

OK, checked everything. It al checks out except: SCSI and RAID contorllers - no drivers installed; Direct Memory Acess Controller - no drivers installed; Motherboard Resources - no drivers installed; Numeric Data Processor - no drivers installed; Nvidia Nforce PCI system managment - no drivers installed; Nvidia Nforce2 memory controller - no drivers installed; Programmable interrupt controller - no drivers installed; system board - no drivers installed; system speaker - no drivers installed; system timer - no drivers installed; I don't know what half of those mean, but my computer isn't suffering from major problem only this minor hiccup thing going on. Are any of those important?

Oh, when it hiccups, the task manager shows that nothing is taking up cpu except for 2 things, the task manager itself and system idle. This problem has been happening since day 1 when there was nothing installed except windows. Since then i've gone through all kinds of bios updates and windows updates, but none of those have helped.

did you install all the drivers for the motherboard,
should be on the cd that came with the board.
doing that should fix all the problems.

you must have the drivers installed for the motherboard to perform properly

I would suggest that you reinstall the drivers from the cd
if device manager is telling you that there is no drivers installed, that is just what it means
with out the proper drivers, the motherboard will not work correctly

you must have all the drivers installed

Alright, Don't know what is going on but here is what is happening: I insert the cd that came with the mobo. 2 buttons: install drivers; service pack 1. I try to install the drivers and the nvidia wizard comes up and it has a message saying its unpacking files or whatever (I guess they go somewhere in temp) but then the wizard closes and there is nothing I can do about it. I go to Abit's web site, d/l the drivers from there and try to install and the same thing happens. I am pretty sure it didn't do this before. Any ideas about why it is doing this particular thing?

Exclamation XP pro desktop frozen

I am having a similar issue. When I boot the desktop will not refresh and no icons can not be clicked on. I can run almost any program from the start menu. When I go to my computer all I get is the flash light looking for it. Task manager says the only thing working is itself and system idle. If I wait long enough it will come up. Did you ever find a solution for your issue?

I have good news and bad news. Upon reinstalling windows I can reinstall the drivers for my mobo now. Condition is the same (regarding my last post). Bad news #2, for you saint, is that I have found no fix for windows xp pro. I have discovered this happens much less frequently using xp home. That's the good news.

It seems not too many people suffer from this?

This sounds like an issue I'm having with Windows XP home edition. When mine freezes up though it lasts anywhere from 1 minutes to 5 minutes. I open the CTRL+Alt+Delete window but it only comes up after the freeze. I left the window open at one point and the problem was my PF usage shooting through the roof for no apparent reason. Another time my CPU usage shot up to 100% out of nowhere. ( This one doesn't happen often but my CPU usage is spuratically changing from 10% to 100% and everything in between. Even when I just get done restarting.)

I was hoping someone here would have some idea on why my PF usage will go from 200 to 800 when I don't open/do anything. A friend of mine said that it was a known issue with XP, but wasn't sure how to fix it.

Anyone have any ideas on what this is or how to fix it? (Not sure if this is the right place to post, but since the problem seemed close to mine I thought it better then making a new thread. Sorry if it's the wrong spot.)
