I have Win98SE and everytime I start the computer, it's trying to run the "Windows Registry Checker", and the only way to get rid of it is to Ctrl-Alt-Del and End Task. I have checked the Start up options, nothing there.... I have ran RegCleaner and cleaned everything... I have ran AGV, all clean... I have ran Adaware and deleted all....
Any ideas how to get rid of this ? Thanks Daisie |

Windows98se usually runs that on every startup by design. It's precautionary. If the Registry is in good shape, it should only take a few seconds (15 to 20 on recent machines).
You normally wouldn't see it, though, as it usually runs in the background. Try booting to DOS (you can select DOS mode from your Start/Shutdown menu), and from the command prompt, type scanreg/opt This will optimize your Registry, so that future Registry checking takes less time. If it still continues to take too long, you can disable that scan in msconfig. From the Start/Run box, type in "msconfig" (without the quotes). Go to the Startup tab, and remove the checkmark next to Scanreg or Registry check. If you do this, though, you might want to run the Registry Checker manually every week or so. . .so that you'll have a backup Registry to "roll-back" to if the current Registry is damaged. You can run it from the Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information...and from System Information's "Tools" menu, select Registry Checker. That should do it. Have you had any other trouble with the system (like error messages or system hangs)? . . . Gary [p.s. ...just for reference: it's fairly normal for Windows 98se to take a minute or so to boot... 30 seconds is very good, 60 seconds is average for non-networked systems, 90 seconds is normal for networked systems] Last edited by GaryRouth; 01-11-2004 at 03:54 PM. |

Thanks Gary,
I have deleted the line ScanRegistry out in his Regedit. I will tell him to do it manually. Thanks Diane |

Nice work.
That Registry edit is the permanent way to do things - I like that especially for those pesky startups that multimedia software likes to stick in there. I guess your customer was in a pretty big hurry for a quick boot-time. Wait till he gets an XP machine with an Intel mobo & it's quick boot-times ...the 3.2 ghz cpus don't hurt anything either . . .
