Hi JP,
You might want to just disable it from automatically starting. There are two versions of Messenger; Windows Messenger comes with XP, and MSN Messenger, which has to be installed by a user. Each can be disabled. Go to Start, All Programs, and find one of the messenger programs. Open it and click on Tools, Options, and then look for a place to uncheck automatic start up and log on. Both programs are a little different, but they both are easy to disable. Good Luck with it. I am presently having a problem with the MSN Messenger phone feature. I listed a thread and hope someone can give me a clue!

I know MSN Messenger has an option in the program to run when windows starts- not to hard to disable. MSN Messenger really is not a bad app.

MS Messenger can be disabled from the Services tab in the Computer Management window.

right click My Computer
click Manage
go down to Services, dbl click messenger and disable.

If you're still having problems and want to remove Messenger from your system completely, go to Start>Run and type in (or copy and past from here):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Click OK (or press the Enter key), reboot and Messenger should be gone.
