Laptop not starting up

My girlfriend has an IBM thinkpad with Windows 2000 professional (in fact right now i am on the computer in safe mode). When she (or I for that matter) attempts to boot the computer up the thinkpad screen comes up then a white status bar comes up at the bottom of the screen (all of which are normal during the startup). After that the windows 2000 screen comes up with the blue status bar at the bottom, after that loads the screen turns black and never comes back on. I went into safe mode and ran spybot and adware and attempted to run my virus scan (AVG free edition) but an error came up saying "Driver(CORE) not found winerr=2". I haven't tried using the last known good configuration feature yet because if it is possible I would rather try to figure out what's causing the problem and fix it. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas what the problem could be.

Any ideas? I ran chkdisk and got avg to work (in the dos version) and neither one found anything. I'm still working in safe mode.
