I recently upgraded from Win 98SE to XP Home using the Upgrade package, but it runs like crap, so I want to do a clean installation. I know that the Upgrade disk will do this, but I have a Dell
that came with the OEM copy of Win 98SE. Will I be able to show that I own 98 after reformatting the hard drive. My real question, I guess, is Do you need the Win98SE CD? I have one that I burned, but not an original one, will this work?

Try to set the bios to boot from the cd rom drive, strat the computer with the cd in the drive. When it igves you you the option to upgrade don't do it,press F8 and follow the instructions.
Hope this helps. |

I guess my question wasn't very clear. I have read if you do a clean install from the upgrade CD, it asks you to put in the Win 98 CD to confirm that you own 98, and are therefore legally eligible for the upgrade. I need to know if this will work even though I don't have an orgina Win98 CD.

Yoy should not have to have the origional Win 98 cd if the Dell was loaded with 98 when you bought it. The origional Win 98 should recoginize the new install. That is if it came with it when it was new.
