Other than the look of the desktop and such. Which is considered a better OS? Or are they equal?

There will be a quiz on the question next wk LOL!!!

It would be nice to here a lot of differnce opinions from people of the forum on which they prefer and why.

XP> 2000 was designed totally for the business setting, XP was designed to incorporate both business and home settings. So XP is more favorable to the software you like to run on a home computer.

XP has a different GUI then 2000, XP Pro supports IIS while 2000 Pro doesn't. XP Pro is more user friendly while 2000 is more of a buisness OS. XP Pro also supports wireless LANS while 2000 Pro needs a special patch.

To put it simply:

XP Pro is more user friendly but does have some powerfull server features

2000 Pro is a simple buisness/networking OS

XP Pro and 2000 Pro both have a 10 user limit. It is rather difficult to have a powerful server with a limit of 10 users. Both XP Pro and 2000 Pro are business networking OS's with very little difference in how they network.

Other than the driver support, Multimedia Support, GUI, More Wizards and Spider Solitaire, there isn't a whole lot of difference. XP is more of a nag than 2K, always trying to get you to clean up your desktop, hide your icons, report your errors and update your files. My favorite feature that 2K doesn't have is a quick format on installing it which can save some time.

Good article. Now since I currently run 2000 Pro pretty much don't need the extra bells a whistles so staying with 2000 is probably better for me. One point the article did mention is about things like games are more friendly with XP, well I haven't had any problems yet with games I using with 2000.

Hi guys,
2K or XP Pro....Hmmmm.

I've used all MS OS's apart from 98 (POS IMHO).

2K is a very good OS. However SP4 seems to cause a few problems instead of fixing them! That aside I used it up to SP3 with no mahor issues.

However my hard drive was on it's last legs and I got a few BSOD. So I backed up my stuff and popped in a new drive with XP Pro. The initial 'barebones' desktop and GUI threw me for a while but I got over that.

All in all the two OS's are as different as they are the same......if you know what I mean

I'm running XP pro on my two PC's now and it's been just as good as 2k. Like some of the new features but had a 'dodgey' windows update that screwed my other PC up big time!! Thank God for system restore......and the fact that I had it turned on in the first place :eek.

With a good machine with quality hardware, a CPU in at least the 1.x Ghz range and at least 512Mb ram you should be sailing with XP.

Having said that this PC is a PIII 550 o/ced to 632 and running XP with 512Mb ram. Stable and great for the net but NOT for gaming. 632Mhz doesn't do that much these days in terms of gaming it seems....not enough ummphh.....that's why I have my gaming rig!

Sorry for the longish post but I was tempted to go back to as far as Windows 95b......ahhhh they were the days

I have both OS and the two differences I really notice is the following :

1. Windows XP Pro has more bells and whistles than Windows 2000 Pro, meaning most of it on the surface is eye candy "Artificial".

2. Windows 2000 Pro deep down is meant for business, I found this out the hard way, once when I formated a hard drive it format it different (I forgot the term it used) but all I know is that I couldn't do a few things with it (Software wise, Partion Magic wouldn't work on the drive) that I could do with a normal formated hard drive. Other than that doing a different format on it ran like a normal hard drive for the most part.

I used to have Wdinwos 2k but when I upgraded to XP everything was smoother and easier to use. I think Win XP is a more user-friendly OS but either will do what you tell it to. Right now im typing from a 750Mhz P3 with 256mb pc100 and XP is running smoothly. Win 2k can run smoothly with 128mb of ram.

Personally, between the two, without tweaking, I think 2K runs like it has a freight train tied to it's ankle... XP is far more responsive.

I like how you dis things that you have no experience with. If you have never used it why are you saying that it is bad.

Hi Dragon,
Well in fairness I've used 98se and it wasn't too bad at all for gaming etc....

What I should have said is that a few years ago I couldn't get it to run without BSOD's on this PC no matter what I tried. I tried installing it on several occasions with varing degrees of success/failure. In the end I tried ME and that worked great!

Hell, if it works on your PC then good for you but personally I had a bad experience with it on this PC. I don't know why it wouldn't behave but it just didn't.

Hope that clears things up a bit
