Run?

I have been a self taught enthusiast(along with huge doses of help from PCMech users) but I have never understood where folks come up with....what's the right term....proggies, apps, utilities(?) that are executed from the RUN line? Is there a comprehensive list somewhere? Like recently I read apost about "dxdiag" to get current version of DirectX. I have used msconfig in Win98. I feel like there are a whole lot about this I don't know. Maybe folks could post RUN line commands that they use with a short explanation of its use and if it is OS specific That would be too cool!

Any program can be run from the command line as long as it is in your path. Here is a handy one Start/Run/Spider (XP only) . Actually the two that I use the most are cmd for command prompt and regedt32 for the reg edit.

Cool

Good suggestion. One I used a lot in WIN98 was SFC (System File Checker) to replace missing or damaged files.

Marving, I have used regedit on Win98 boxes.....

There are good tools from the Run line for network troubleshooting aren't there?

With the number of machines I've dealt with, and deal with, it becomes imperative to learn the commandline equivalent of searching for the shortcut. Most people have their computers personalized to have different program groups show up differently, in their start menu - making it irritating to go through everything searching for a command:

some of the common ones that I know of the top of my head -
cmd : opens a command prompt
eventvwr.msc : eventviewer
secpol.msc : security policy editor
services.msc : Services
compmgmt.msc : Computer management

then basic survival tips also include knowing commandline ftp, telnet, netstat, net ...

Win9X boxes, open a DOS prompt, switch to the C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND directory and type in each command followed by /?

On NT based boxes... type HELP at a command prompt to see the commands... type the command followed once again by /? for its usage.
