Turning it off will help when you're using Win Explorer.

As may doing this at a cmd prompt "diskperf -n"
and adding this to regedit= hkeylocalmachine/system/currentcontrolset/control/filesystem. In the right pane, right click and click new dword value and type "NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate" then hit enter. Then click on the dword again and select modify, then set the dword value to decimal, and enter 1 where the 0 is. This disables last access update, an entry that is done to every file whenever it is accessed for any reason. If you aren't paranoid you can do this and sleep at night. If you are let it be. It will give a small boost in performance as the heads don't have to wander the disk anymore in a futile effort to keep you secure from bad guys who look at your files. If you don't care that they're watching, is it still paranoia? Last edited by Blakhart; 01-16-2004 at 05:42 PM. |
