Uninstalling cdrom drivers

I am getting a balloon message in xp that cdrom drivers are causing the system to be unstable and that xp is keeping them from operating for saftey. In device manager I see the drivers with a red mark. There are two along with several other files that don't have a read mark. Each time I delete/uninstall them they come back with the next boot up. I think they got screwed up when I tried to install an incompatible [with xp] driver for a Iomega cdrw. How can I uninstall them? Thanks for your attention.

Optical Drive Drivers are built in to XP. Since Windows 95 the drivers have been a part of the operating system and you do not need to install drivers when you install an Optical drive. However many drives come with a floppy which contains drivers for DOS and Windows 3.1. If you installed these then windows will give errors.
Also are your drives jumpered correctly?
What you need to do is pull the IDE cable out of the drive(s) and restart the machine, then shut it down, and plug the cable back in. Restart the machine and let windows install the drivers.

as far as I have known, no drivers are needed in xp,
I think the support for cdrom drives in set up in the bios, but I could be wrong too.
try removeing the ide controlerfrom the device manager that the cd is connected to and reboot the system, it should boot up with it being detected and reinstalled.
also there is the inf files that are installed with a cd that comes with the motherboard, its possible one of them got damages somehow.

Thank you gentlemen for responding. Yes, what i did was try to install sofware that wasn't even supported by xp I think. Here is the scoop:
Morris, I tried the diconnect of the ide cable then start, restart, connect cable and restart. Same two drivers there again in device manger/cdrom drives/properties/driver details.
They are the following for the "Lite-On LTN483S 48x scsi cdrom device" cdr4_2k.sys and cdralw2k.sys. On the boot up after removing the ide cable, device manager did not show any cdr rom devices in the list. Like I said, after hooking up the ide cable and restart, there they were again with a red mark. Same balloon at start up. More information:
This is a Dell 420 PIII 733 with 128 megs of rdram 800. It was suppose to have 256 megs - another 128 is coming in the mail. It has two scsi 9 meg hard drives from the mother board. The board has room for another cpu. I didn't note the make of the MB. This apparently was all installed by Dell as there is a lable to this effect on the back with the Dell logo.
Another thing, I just put xp into it and only have Norton System works in. So I can reformat and install with out a hassle if you think it would help. Maybe the bios got screwed up. Do you think defaulting the bios would help? Ok, guys, have at it. I appreciate any help. Go easy though. I am right at the Murphy boarder of knowledge with this one.

If the Iomega drivers are still installed you may be getting a conflict. Go into add/remove programs and see if the Imoega driver is still listed. If it is uninstall it and see if there is any improvement.

Karnevil, Nope, checked, no Iomega software in Add/remove.
Does anyone know if I format the hard drives again and reinstall xp will this take care of the problem? Any help appreciated.

Reformating and reinstalling will take care of it.

All is cool. After formating and re intalling xp no more driver problem. Also added cdrw and zip drive and xp found and did the drivers for them. Now I truly believe in plug and play. Have learned a few things. Mostly if xp does not ask for drivers after a hardware install, don't try to add some especially if they are not compatible. Thanks guys.
