Delete My Recent Documents Files?

Windows XP, Home Edition, SP1.

Is there any reason I should not delete the files in C:/Documents and Settings/Owner/My Recent Documents? All of them are shortcuts except one which is "Desktop.ini" configuration settings. There is also a Desktop.ini shortcut. If I deleted them I would do so in Windows Explorer.

Also, what is the purpose of these files/shortcuts in the My Recent Documents folder?

There's no reason not to delete them, as they're just shortcuts. But, be aware this list will repopulate as you open more documents over time, as the purpose of that submenu is to provide a quick handy shortcut to the documents you recently opened. It's meant to be a time saving device.

Don't delete the Desktop.ini file though. I'm guessing you have checked the option to show hidden files and folders, which is why you can see it.

There's an easy way to clear these files and prevent them from reappearing in your start menu. Right click the the bottom task bar,select start menu/customized/advanced/under recent documents, uncheck the box to display and clear the files.

Tell me again Panama Red. When I right click the task bar I don't get a selection of start menu. The start button on the far left of the task bar doesn't seem to be what you are talking about either since after clicking there there is no available selection for customized.

Could the confusion be because I am using the "classic view"?

Found what you were talking about, but it took a while. It is not there in the classic view. Had to change to Non-classic view to see what you were referring to.

Made the change then switched back to classic view. Hope it will carry over. Guess I'll find out shortly.

Your recent document files list the latest 15 documents you opened and are located in C:/Documents and Settings/Owner/My Recent Documents. Just open the folder in Windows Explorer and dlete all the files in there but for "desktop.ini".
