Question windows media player won't open

I am trying to play audio files on my computer and my Windows Media Player will not open up. I have tried playing audio files from a cd, I have tried playing audio files I previously saved. When you first load the cd and windows asks if you'd like to play the cd and you click ok it still won't play. Each time I try to play the file I just get the error sound. I have had no problems with my cd rom player or any problems playing audio files up till now. I am running Windows XP Pro. Where do I start looking and what can I do to fix this problem? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Have you got WMP9?
Have you recently installed a popup stopper?
Have you got the WMP9 hotfix from msupdate?

What version of windows media player do you have installed? If it is a older version you might want to try un-installing it and downloading the latest version V9. from windows update.

If yo do have a pop up stopper try disabling it and see if that helps. Reboot your quicker at the keys than me

I have wmp 9 installed. As a matter of fact, it's probably the latest version of this player since I downloaded it sometime around the Holidays. I do not have a pop up stopper installed. I do not have the wmp 9 hotfix from msupdate. I ran Norton Anti Virus this morning and had no viruses. Any other ideas on how to fix my medial player? Thanks for the advice so far.

Go to windows update and download the hotfix. It probably wasn't available at the time you originally installled the software. If that doesn't help then try uninstalling it and going back and redownloading it again. It is possible the file became corrupt during download. I have had this happen before.

You also might want to check out the knowledge base to see if they have any solutions to your problem. Good luck

Do you have any other audio players (winamp?) on the computer?
Do you have RealJukebox?
Do you have RealPlayer?
What format are the files? (mp3, .wav, .ra, ...?)

I have soundmax which deals with the sound on the computer. But no, I do not have Real Audio or Real Player or real jukebox on this computer. I also have Roxio's Easy CD creator 5 which deals with cd's and sound. The format of files I'm trying to play are just audio off a regular music cd, plus .mp3 files. But since I can't even open my media player I'm not sure if the format of the file makes any difference at this point or not. This one is really puzzeling, any more ideas?

Get winamp. Use it to play all your audio stuff.
Check to see if WMP can play an .avi and a .mpg
If those also fail, then you can UNinstall it from control panel, add/remove Windows components, restart, reinstall it, THEN go back to MS and get WMP9 updates and codecs.
