Up grading to XP Pro

Hi,
I would like to add a larger HD to my Dell Latitude notebook and upgrade to XP Pro. I am currently using win 98 se. I have XP Pro on my desktop and am wondering if I can use it to install on my new hard drive or do I have to buy another copy? Secondly...I am wondering if it would be better to put a full version on the new hard drive or is it okay to use an upgrade. I will be using Ghost to backup my hard drive and reinstall if I can ever get it to work. It refuses to read my cd rom.

Thanks,
Wendy

Since you will have to activate xp, you will need to buy at least an extra lic for xp. The lic costs almost as much as buying the software so it is probably best to just buy the cd. If you have a full version of win9x [not a dell restore cd] then you can use an upgrade to do a full install. During the install process, setup will ask for your win9x cd; it will look at it then ask for the xp cd to continue the install.

This site has home for $95 and pro for $142; both full versions.

Thanks for your input. From what I gather an upgrade should work just fine and I don't need to spend the extra cash for the full version?

As long as you own a full version of one of these, the xp upgrade will work fine.

crjdriver,
I went to "This" website. Are they legit? So if I buy the COA I can use my XP Pro to install? That is cheaper!!

I have bought a few items from them with no problem. As long as you have a valid product key, you should be able to use your disk. You are buying the lic or the "Right" to use the software.

As an example I use custom win2k or XP disks that I have made with the service pack slipstreamed along with some utilities that I always install like speedfan, system wiper, etc. I use the persons key and my disk; never had a problem yet.
