Question My XP won't connect to the internet..

I don't get it: I plugged the coax cable into the back of the pc ,and that's all there was to it with my old windows98 pc (the one I'm on now).
With my new XP pc, however, I can't get a connection. The internet connection wizard tells me to reconfigure all the pc's on the network with the windows xp cd! I'm sharing internet with 7 people on my floor, so that's not an option.
Can someone help me with this?

Thanks in advance!

Are you hooking into a router or something else. Is this a school dorm? Have you been assigned a static IP address?

Yeah, I'm connected through a hub (that's a router, right?). It's just a flat, I share the internet with some people on my floor.
And I have no idea about my IP address, it doesn't say anything in my LAN options: All the boxes are unchecked.

Ok. This is what I know so far:
The led on the hub doesn't light up for my pc so I've been told that it's probably my networkcard. If so, that's sucks big time, as it's an onboard networkcard (ASUS p4p 800) and I'll have to sned the entire motherboard back to the store...

Have you loaded the drivers for it?
Is it enabled in bios, does the system recognize it?

Cool

Drivers for NIC probably need to be loaded as Alfie suggested if this is a new PC. Are you sure that you have a HUB? If it is a HUB you will have to put in a IP address. If router you will set up to obtain IP address automatically.

I figured I didn't need to install any drivers for the networkcard, as they weren't included on the cd that came with the motherboard..
I'll see what I can find on the ASUS website..

I can't remember seeing anything about the networkcard in the bios, btw. Where should it be?

Just load up the ASUS autorun utility from CD, and then select LAN drivers.

If it does turn out to be a bad NIC (network card), you don't have to send the motherboard back. You can buy a NIC for around $15 at WalMart...maybe cheaper other places...disable the onboard NIC in Device Manager and install the new card.

(No signal from the NIC could also be a bad cable)

Yeah, I know, but I can't stand the idea of this shop selling me a motherboard that doesn't work. Even though it would just be easier to buy a networkcard.
