Control Panel
Recently got a new computer, and moved my old computer into another room, The old computer is Windows 98 SE...anyways, I went in on it today and was trying to take off some programs through the Add/remove programs in the control panel, and when I double clicked on it it said "access to path specified is denied". This happens when I click on everything in the control panel. Anyone have any ideas whats up with it?

Have you networked this PC with the new one?

You may want to Restore system to a point in time before the problem arose. Be quick, though as Win98 stores only five or so restore points by default. New restore points take the place of older restore points.

Windows 98 does not have a restore feature.
Do a google search for a program called Add/Remove Plus and download?install?run the trial version. It should be able to uninstall the programs for you and it gets rid of even broken programs. |

To remove the old programs from Win98, do a regular shutdown on the Win98 computer. Then disconnect your cat5 cable from the Win98 network card. Then start to power up the Win98 box, but start tapping the F8 key as soon as you see the POST screens - this should bring up a boot menu. Choose Safe Mode. Then try Add/Remove from there. When all is well, shutdown again, reconnect the network, and boot normally.
If you have still get that error in Safe Mode, you can try: Shutdown the system, then boot with a bootable floppy or your Win98 CD, and choose "start computer without CD support [or with, it's just quicker without]" (this is DOS, by the way). At the prompt, type scanreg/restore and pick a registry point from the time you could access Add/Remove without trouble. Not sure why your read/write priveledges would have changed - might run a virus scan just in case. morris is referring to the System Restore program that arrived with WinME, while Always up is referring to the scanreg/restore command that can restore a previously stored Registry from a list. How many are stored depends on what value is set in an item in the system.ini file. The default, just as AlwaysUp points out, is five. Add/Remove Plus has good reviews, and should do the trick if you have trouble removing things in Safe Mode, or simply want to give a pretty good program a try. Best of luck . . . Gary |
