Win Xp

I have 2 computers at home running WIN XP Home. I purchased both copies of WIN XP. I 'm building a 3rd computer right now and I was wondering if I could just use one of my existing versions of WIN XP? Or do I have to buy another copy of it?

If your question is:

"Can I have three machines with only two copies of the OS?" then the answer is NO

If the question is

"Can I remove the OS from one computer and place it on the other? then the answer is YES

My question was the "Can I have three machines with only two copies of the OS?" then the answer is NO"

Is it because of the activation?

No it is because it is against the EULA to have one licensed copy of WindowsXP on more than one machine - and consequently illegal to do so.

As to how will Microsoft find out - the answer is - through Windows Product Activation.

I'm confused here, you're original question asked if you could use one of your existing OS's on the new machine. by existing i assumed you meant on of the XP Home licenses that you had replaced with Pro. Bare with me here.

You have 2 PC w/XP Home that you are replacin with XP Pro,

That will give you 2 PC's with Pro and 2 unused XP Home licenses.

You can do whatever you want with the XP Home licenses, including installing one on your 3rd PC.

I don't believe he said anything about XP Pro. He has 2 copies of XP Home and is getting a 3rd. PC. He needs another copy of XP.

Depending on how many licenses he has. Remember, only one license per computer. Otherwise it is illegal.
