Question msconfig, Old Programs

Does anyone know how to get rid of the old program listings that appear in msconfig. I have a lot of programs that are no longer on my machine, but they are still listed in there. Thanks.

You dont need additional s/w installed to do the things that Windows will do for you or show you where to do.

If you mean the programs in the StartUp section of msconfig, msconfig itself gives you directions of where to look for the files under the location column.

In general, for these programs they are either located in the startup folder or in the registry.

Of course, I do feel it necessary to qualify the above statement, if you dont want to use the registry editor then by all means use 3rd party software that will do it for you automatically, as forceflow pointed out.
Be aware though, that nearly every software on your system will cause an additional registry entry, or an additional file on your system - personally, I don't like the idea of putting in more stuff when I am trying to remove stuff out.
Editting a registry, is something that must be done carefully, but if done with the normal precautions (such as not deleting all files from the Windows directory etc etc), then its a rather simple task.

Illustrated example

From the image:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
would mean that the key is in the registry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
would mean that the key is in the registry in:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Common Startup: refers to the startup folder (not a registry key) which in this case refers to:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Of course there is an msconfig specific quirk -
if you previously uncheck a particular task from starting up, in the course of maintenance etc, then msconfig will remove that key from the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run or HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
and store it in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg
All you would need to do is to delete the defunct registry keys.

Ok, I have deleted all the files from the HDD (actually it was only one .exe). The .exe that I deleted was the one that the startup entry pointed to. I can't find anything for it in the registry, and the darn thing still shows up.

Look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg
