Best way to freshly install ME with OEM disc?
Hello,
I've decided to re-install Win ME on my Gateway PC because my hard drive has become really slow and sluggish and I am having problems. I have a Gateway backup CD, which I've already used to back up ME about 2 and a half years ago. I've also just backed up all the files I want to keep. What's the best and easiest way to get rid of what I have and start fresh without doing any damage to anything? Thanks, JTH! |

Copy anything you need onto another HDD, then reformat the origional drive and install the O/S.
As a side note, it probably would be a good idea to at least get win2000.

I know but I don't know anyone who has a newer OS then ME (and I can't afford a fresh copy of XP).
How do I format? |

If you have a restore CD and not a real OS installation CD, I think you would just put the CD in the drive, change the boot order to have the CD drive as the first boot device in BIOS and reboot the system. The restore disc will take over once the system boots from it.
On some older name brand systems, you would need a separate floppy disc to boot from. Cricket

. . . Everything OK now?
Cricket's advice about the Restore CD does what force-flow recommended [reformat/reinstall fresh] it just does so automatically. Nice thing about those restore CDs is that they have all the necessary drivers and usually bundled software, too. To keep the sluggishness away, try setting the amount of Restore points used by either WinMe's System Restore or Gateway's GoBack to a smaller amount than previously. As restore points start piling up, they can pack a performance hit. Also defragment the hard drive once and a while. [A little extra system memory - 256mb is a sweet spot - can help an older system too] . . . Gary |

Yeah I'm back now having freshly re-installed. Everything seems to have gone okay except my sound, which isn't working. I'm using a Creative Labs Soundblaster PCI soundcard with Boston BA735 speakers. Windows has them listed in Control Panal/System but I get no sound when I play any sound files.
I'm trying to download the drivers from www.driverguide.com . Any other ideas? |

I downloaded the driver from the above site ^^ but it's for Dell PC's unfortuantely. I just found my OEM Gateway driver CD an it has a large crack down the centre, meaning it's not detected by my CD-ROM drive. So at this point I'm really looking for help, thanks.
EDIT: I got the drivers from the Gateway website and everything is okay now! Last edited by JTH; 02-08-2004 at 10:22 AM. |

Glad it's working now. I like the Gateway support sites - clearly organized, navigate well, even have a nice appearance.
