What is "System Restore"

Hi

What is system restore used for ? How does it work ?

It is basically a back-up of critical system files. It should not be thought of like a full backup image.
The XP version is very good for correcting bad software installs or some other problems that would crash previous versions of windows. However it is only as good as you make it.

So why when I scanned and deleted virus in my PC, I was advised to turn off System Restore ? Thanks for your response.

If the virus was present in the Windows during a system checkpoint (backup), then that virus was compressed and stored alongwith the windows critical files that are backuped during this operation. So you must turn off the sytem restore when removing a virus, which in XP means that all restore points are automatically deleted. In Windows ME turning it off allows you to delete the Restore folder. When you turn it back on it makes a new system checkpoint.
