XP comes with notepad and wordpad.... NOT word and excel. Word and Excel are part of OFFICE XP. It could run you anywhere from $10 to $200+.

Err... I'd like to get my hands on a legit copy of Office for 10 dollars without buying anything else... but I've never heard that low a price...

What do you want word and excel for? You can purchase Microsoft Works which is significantly less and the package also gives you a processor and spreadsheet program.

There are also free viewers and converters that allow you to read stuff like word documents if you do not own word.

Here at school I can get a legit copy of OFFICE XP for like 20$, not 10 my bad. And also, being a computer person and helping people around school, I have noticed many people that use works... come to school which has word, and their document isn't viewed right, or is all messed up. I do not like works!

There are 2 versions of works. The Works Suite comes with the complete version of word xp, and ms money, encarta, picture it, etc. The less expensive Works 7.0 only comes with a basic word processor, database, and spreadsheet, etc.

I always thought Microsoft should offer the Office Programs separately.
Lots of people dont need all of the stuff that comes with Office, so it seems as if it would have a good palce in the market to offer these on an individual basis.
But then again, Billy G, has the big bucks, so evidently he knows whats up

Ebay is a good place to look for a good price on Office.

Or you could use OpenOffice - an application from Sun Microsystems (I think) that has an uncanny resemblence to Office2003...but its a freeware. It is compatible with .doc , .xls , .ppt extensions. I would give it a try, or at least look at it. It works just like MS Office too.

Hope that helps,
kram

Open Office is a good office suite. I've been using it for a while and the best part is, it was free.
