Exclamation Problems with computer start-up

SoyoK7V Dragon+
AthalonXP 1800+
Maxtor ATA133 60gb HD
Pioneer 16x DVD
Lite-on 32x CD-RW
Teach Floppy (black of course)
Antec SX1035 black case
ATI radeon 9600XT
Windows 2000 Professional

In the past few days I've had a problem starting up my computer. I would turn on the computer, and it would load the bios fine, then it would go to the window's startrup, but once it finishes wiht the loading bar, it would blank out the screen, then go back to the "windows is starting up" screen, but nothing would happen, it would just freeze at that point, and do nothing else.

the only change I can remember is that I recently installed a radeon card on thursday. But it was starting up fine for the next two days after that. Man I really need to get my computer to start up.

Thank you and hope I can get help.

Could be a driver problem. Can you start in Safe Mode?

I have started in safe mode, but now I'm on the computer. IT starts up fine after I restart over and over for a while, but it just doesn't respond sometimes when starting up.

Since you recently installed a vid card, I would first uninstall the drivers and see if the system will now boot.

Did you fully remove all the drivers and software from the old vid card you replaced?

still no luck, it still takes several tries, various key mashing techniques, and the occasional foul mouth rambling to get my computer starting up right. But I noticed this only happens when I don't have the computer on for a while. If I just restart, then it starts up fine. I want to re-install windows, but can I do it without deleting all the stuff on my comp?

Not sure why you want to reinstall Windows when it just might be a vid card driver problem.

Did you uninstall the vid card drivers and see how the box boots? That would be the first step I'd take as it also could be another problem with your system and you have to narrow down what it is. Yes, you can reinstall Windows but that may be the hard way to go and it may not fix the problem...

Hi indigo0086,

So the system does work normally in Safe Mode but not in Normal Mode. It still sounds like a driver issue to me, but it could even be a PS having troubles.

I'm not that familiar with W2K but I think it doesn't have the Msconfig utility. Anyway you can turn off all Start programs and see if it boots normal?

actually, it doesn't load in safe mode. It says "loading" forever, and it plays the little color scroll bar animation, but it doesn't load.

Sorry, I missunderstood about the Safe Mode... You may have to reinstall after all. I assume you already scanned for virus's and the like?

Do you think it may be the power supply. I only have about 350 watts and I heard similar problems being caused by low power.

It could be a power supply (PS) and mentioned that possibility above. Sorry for using the abbr "PS" for powersupply...

A 350W unit should be enough if it's a quality unit. But, with lesser units, then even a "500" watt unit can give weird problems.

Okay I have the drivers uninstalled, and I don't get the same problems. SO I think it's the display drivers. But if they are the drivers, how can I have the computer work properly with them installed. Damn this sucks.

With the drivers uninstalled, now is a good time to run a Registry cleaner / checker, anti virus complete scan, spyware and trogan checks, and a scandisk and defrag. That help make sure there isn't something messing with you. I'd also check and remove any directory remants of the prior vid cards utilities and the like. It is also a good time to update your motherboard's drivers. That general proceedure just helped me with a vid card problem of my own.
