clean install XP pro

I'm trying to help a friend on the phone about installing XP. He says he does not get an option to format when he does the install. He is booting off the CD. Had XP on the PC already. Wanted to start new.
That not working for him he tried to FDISK / format the HD.
But then said he could not get the XP disk to boot at all.
So he loads ME.
Then loads the XP pro CD again, and just does an upgrade.
But in all this he never gets an option to format the HD while loading XP.
Going on memory for me is not a great idea, thats why I am here. I remember getting the option to format the HD when I have loaded XP. Reminded me of loading NT4.
Could someone clear this up for me.
If you boot off the XP CD do you get the option to format the HD?
Can you boot off the XP CD if you have run FDISK and formated the HD (using DOS)?
thanks for any help
B

You remember correctly, except I don't know for sure if XP will offer the format option if it finds a OS already installed (My fewl installs have all been fresh installs). If your friend has no data to worry about, have him boot with a ME boot floppy and delete the Windows directory, then try the CD install again. Even if it's an upgrade, it will ask for the prior OS's cd for verification.

I have not installed xp in a few months, however I think you do get the option to format in one of the menus. Have him delete the partition first then I am sure he will get an option to format.

Just checked it should be the fourth menu that is displayed that gives the option to delete the partition. After the warning menu then you will have the option to format.
