Operating System for server?

Is it only a server if u run a operating system like windows 2000 proffesional or windows 2003 server?
cuz im ganna make a gaming server and is it only considered a server if u have server operating system or can i just use windows proffesional cuz the price of a server operating system would kill my wallet.

You can still get a download of server2003 from M$, I think. That makes a great server, but you will have to tell it to open the ports you want for the game server, and running the firewall that's built in is a good idea too.

Hey, if your just running a gaming server. You could just run Windows 2000 Pro or XP Pro.

Redhat Server 7 is the simpelist Linux server OS. Since it's open source, it's so cheap they might as well give it away in cerial boxes.

Other then that Windows 2000 Server is a pretty simple server os if your just learning about servers, however it's very expensive.

if you go to www.linuxiso.org you can download the iso's you can burn to a cd, that's free

For a gaming server like CS, you dont need a Server OS. You can run it from any computer. I would say try the linux, its free.

While the above is true, an older distro will be full of exploits, you'll be rootkitted in no time. Slackware (latest ver) will run with minimal hardware specs, if you have the desire to learn how to do it, and will serve u nicely. Server2003 is still very nice and easy to set up tho.
