Need help transfering data and settings from old HDD to new.

I need a little help if anyone has an idea. A family member has a 120GB HDD in their comp, and only is using about 6GB of it (just buisiness programs and stuff). She will let me have the 120gig in trade for a 13gig that I have, all I have to do is edit some home movies for her, SWEET! There is a catch though, she has WinXP on her computer, all her buisiness progs, and she has it all setup just the way she likes it. For her to let me have the drive, I have to be able to copy EVERYTHING over to the 13gig drive and have it be EXACTLY the same. How can I do this? I tried putting both drives in my computer, booting the system with a third HDD so that none of the files on the 120 would be in use, and copied everything over, file for file, to the 13. I could't get her system to boot with the 13. Nuts! HELP!!!

Isn't there a utility on the XP install CD that transfers files and settings for you?

Go to the manufacturer's web site and down load the hard drive utilities...most of them have a cloning utility that will allow you to image her drive to yours.

An imaging program like Ghost or Drive Image will do the same thing, but the manufacturer's utility is generally free.

real easy actually... you need to use the program from one of the drives manufacturers site... maxblast for Maxtor or DataLifegaurd for WD drives.
Maxblast...

DataLifegaurd...

Thanks for the replys guys. The 120gig is actually a Seagate, so I'll have to look up and see if they have such a utility.

Or...wait....um, ok, need to get my thinking straight here. Since I am copying the 120 to the 13, and the 13 is a Maxtor, then I need Maxtor's utility, right??
