Windows 2003 is for servers, you don't want that. Get Windows XP OEM (just doesn't come with the fancy box and documentation).

Are you planning on starting a server or just want the massive technical features that come with 2003?

That link you showed is for 2003 Server, but it's for 5 clients. It's a good deal if your starting a small network or simply want the OS.

That Newegg link just sells the licenses, not the software. As it says, no software is included.

Buying the licenses just gives you the right to use the software. It doesn't give you the software.

When you "buy" software, you aren't buying the software itself. You are buying a license which gives you the right to use the software. If you have the software but no license, you are using illegal pirated software.

When a business needs to buy Windows for 500 PCs, they don't need 500 sets of CDs, and they aren't going to pay for them. What they buy is 500 licenses. The license and the software media don't necessarily go together at all.

The license lets you install the software on more computers. 5 licenses would be good for 5 computers.

Why don't you just download a free copy from the Microsoft website?

Those aren't even licenses to use the software, they are client access licenses that allow clients to connect to the server, yep thats right, in addition to paying $1500 for the 2003 SBS Premium software, you have to pay extra for each user that connects.

CAL's do not allow you to install the software on more than 1 machine though, so beware the advice in this thread.

From M$:
  • Every installed copy of the server software requires the purchase of a Windows server license.
  • A Windows Server 2003 Client Access License (Windows CAL) is required in order to access or use the server software.

The client computers can have w/e compatible OS on them that you choose.

Sorry. I figured that pwm was talking about an OS for a home PC, not a server. Apologies to pwm. I didn't mean any offense by my original post .
