I do the same thing, but both machines have XP Pro.

Read this:
Remote Desktop - All versions of Windows XP--including Home Edition--support Remote Assistance, which is an assisted support technology that allows a help desk or system administrator to remotely connect to a client desktop for troubleshooting purposes. But Only Pro supports the new Remote Desktop feature, which is a single-session version of Terminal Services with two obvious uses: Mobile professionals who need to remotely access their corporate desktop, and remote administration of clients on a network. You can access a Windows XP Remote Desktop from any OS that supports a Terminal Services client (such as Windows 98 and, interestingly XP Home). XP Home can act as the client in a Remote Desktop session; only Pro can be the server.

This seems to say that XP Home can be the client, not the actual computer used to intitiate connection. If your machine has PRO you should be able to use Remote Desktop in this situation.

If your home machine is behind a router you will probably have to do some port forwarding since using the IP to your home will get you into the router, then you need to send it to the right computer. If no router it shouldnt be that hard, just make sure the home machine has Terminal Services enabled.

it all depends on how the school has their firewall set up. from my school we can't to anything like that (vnc, remote desktop, whatever). but i think you can only run the server from xp pro and the viewer can be on other os's. i could be wrong, but that is just how i see it

well, here's my exact scenario: the client computer is my dell (xp home). the computer which im physically working on (the school computer) is windows 98 with the Remote Desktop client installed. essentially, my problem is that i cant connect to my dell. the fact that XP home doesnt have the option in the remote tab in sys properties doesnt help. so im trying to figure out how to use it as a client.

and the firewall wont be a problem (if there is one!). Before I was able to connect to my other computer, which has xp pro.

Remote Desktop XP Pro to XP Home

Is it possible to remote desktop from a pro machine to a home machine. I tried serveral time and it does not work. I enabled the home machine to accept incomming connections like linking from the pro machine to home to view files that works fine, I just cannot remote in.

No, only a Pro machine can be a remote desktop host. If you want to get into a Home machine remotely, you need a version of VNC.
