very strange icon refreshing and icon loading

I have XP and the icons on the desktop, in folders, etc refresh randomly. By refresh i mean they display the picture that windows gives to icons when the don't have a picture, flashes a few times, and then comes back to what its supposed to be?

has anyone experienced this?


also this may be a seperate problem, but it takes an enormous amount of time to load icons sometimes. Most of the time they display right away(~1sec) but sometimes it takes about (~50- 120sec)

but the first problem occurs all the time. the second happens every once in awhile

p.s. yes my hardrive is defragmented (diskeeper 8.0)
