A fatal exception.....
A fatal exception Oe has occurred at 0167:BFF9DFFF. the current application will be terminated.
after this, kernel.32 caused a general protection fault in module KRNL386.EXE at 0001:00007592. these messages come consecutively. It appears frequently when I start the browser and start surfing the web. Is there a solution to this. running win98se |

This seems to be the week for Kernel32 errors. Check out some of the links in this thread and see if they match your situation at all: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=88578
Watch the error messages carefully: are they always from the same module? Always while starting the same program? (IE?) If it's seemingly random, and several different modules recieving the error, you can try a different stick of RAM (if you have any around), or backing down the memory timings. If it's always the same program generating the errors, try the two quick-fixes in that other thread, and perhaps try a "repair install" of IE (from either your Add/Remove Programs applet in Control Panel, or from the "Tools" menu in "System Information --> Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information . . . from the "Tools" menu choose "Repair Internet Explorer") . . . Gary [p.s. ...another quick fix try is to use System File Checker to check for corrupt files & let it restore them from either your Win98se CD or from C:\Windows\Options\Cabs if you have them on your hard drive... I'd give the IE repair a go first] [...and to start System File Checker, either find it in the Tools menu of System Information (just like the IE repair tool), or from the Start/Run box, type "sfc" without the quotes] Last edited by GaryRouth; 02-07-2004 at 07:18 PM. |

If it's a different module all the time, it can be a hardware problem, usually memory, though others are also rare but possible. You can test the memory with DocMemory from http://www.simmtester.com If you only use the computer for Internet, might as well test the memory - it can be possible that you're not getting errors in other modules simply because you're not using anything else.
You might have to spend a fair amount of time at Windows Update, and re-download IE to update it and it's Security fixes to IE6 level, but an over-the-top reinstall has a fair chance of fixing your trouble http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=70846 Are you using any peer-to-peer software? And did you try AdAware or SpyBot Search&Destroy? . . . Gary |

In case you might be reluctant to try the over-the-top (which might be your quickest angle for a repair), here's a link to the Win98/Me error message center. It has a couple of links dedicated to OE errors: be prepared to spend a bit of time if you decide to research these - there's a fair variety.
http://support.microsoft.com/default...2femresctr.asp ____here's the MS offiicial definition__________ Definition of Fatal Exception 0E Error Messages: Fatal exception error messages are codes that are returned by a program in the following situations: If access to an illegal instruction has been encountered If invalid data or code has been accessed If the privilege level of an operation is invalid When any of these situations occur, the processor returns an exception to the operating system, which in turn is handled as a fatal exception error message. In many situations, the exception is non-recoverable and you must either shut down or restart the computer, depending on the severity of the error. A Fatal Exception 0E is a Page Fault interrupt and typically occurs when the operating system tries to access virtual memory on a demand-paged basis and that "page" is missing or damaged. _____________________________________ It's commonly faulty memory or recently installed software (sometimes spyware - installed unknowingly) that causes this sort of thing. Not the easiest to troubleshoot. That's why there are so many different approaches to try. Best of Luck . . . Gary |
