XP Pro Printer Sharing w/Password

I have XP Pro and I'm on a small network (fraternity house, about 40 computers). I want to share my printer, but only to certain people. How can I go about this? I thought a password would work, but I can't find an option to set a share password. I have other shared files too, and I want those to be available to everyone, but the printer should only be available to a couple people.

I poked around under the security tab for a while in printer properties, but I can't find a way to restrict access to only certain people over a network. I don't really understand some of the advanced file/printer sharing in XP Pro either; I switched to Pro from Home a few months ago and I tend to stick with "Simple File Sharing".

Thanks!

Nick

Disable simple file sharing then click on start\settings\printers. Right click the shared printer and open the security tab. Add the users or group that you want to grant permission to use the printer.

I've done all that, but the problem comes when selecting a user to give those permissions to. I don't know how to create a "user" or a "group." Also, the computers in our house are not on the domain, but on a workgroup. When I go to add a user or a group and try to figure out how to add a few people that can use my printer, I don't know how to add their names to the list. The only location that I can select objects from is "NWALKER", my computer. Any suggestions?

To add users\groups go to control panel\administrative tools\computer management. Open users and create a user profile and grant permissions.

The user will either have to join your workgroup or you will have to join the domain in order to share the printer. To join the domain go back to control panel\network dial up connections, select "network identification" and click on the "network ID tab" You wil need a user profile in the domain servers` active directory in order to logon. Either the name of your computer will have to be entered there also or you will need domain admin rights to create a computer on the domain.
