System.ini and win.ini as W95 doesn't have msconfig.

Also don't forget to look in both the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files!

Here is actually in the registry where you find the startup items::

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

These along with any in the bat file, and the ini files mentioned.

galaxian,

The curser would disappear for a second and then reappear. Nothing else.

ktkendall,
From the registry, can I stop items from running by changing a value or?

Hi all

From that "Run" key in the registry, if you delete the value (which would be the startup program you wish not to run), then it won't run at startup anymore. You can also check two keys just below that one, called "Run Services".

Seems like there are a few freeware/shareware titles that do startup, if you can't get msconfig to run in Win95. I think Cnet or someone like that had one called "Startup Cop" -- but it's been ages since I've looked at those. I took a peek at the SiSoft Sandra utilities, but older versions are hard to find, and the newer ones require Win98 or more recent.

Office 97, if it's installed, adds an early version of MSinfo on Win95 systems. [and the dreaded AOL has it's own version of MSinfo too - in several of it's versions: they call it something like AOL system information]

I'd never heard of using the 98 version of msconfig in 95 before, so I'm interested to see if you can get it to work. . . I wonder if it might need some other files to be present on the machine to work [like an IE version more recent than 4]
. . . Gary

late edit: found a utility at download.com called "Startup Control Panel" that has had a bunch of folks downloading it and giving it good reviews. . . I haven't tried it myself [I have to justify the purchase of my Registry books, so I edit away...] - but anyway, here's the link http://download.com.com/3000-2094-15...ml?tag=lst-3-3

oh - and don't forget the Startup folder in the Start/Programs menus = startup stuff is in there, too.

I have used Startup Control Panel on Win2k computers and it's a good choice if you want an easy way.

Gary,
Only takes the one file to make it work. Don't recall the 95 version I have it on, but suspect that it is probably 95a and also suspect that it will work across the full set. But I've never proven it to myself.

Redo40,
For some reason I thought Startup Control Panel was for W2K only. I've been using it on all my W2K machines.
I put it in this laptop with W95B and works great.
Without Office 97, Quicken, Office Find Fast, and other assorted proggies starting, this laptop starts darn quick.
Now all I have to do is find a HDD for it.
Thanks to everybody for their replies and help,
Carl
