Programs Launch Then Immediately Close - HELP!
I'm running XP Pro and always leave my PC on. On Sunday I spent the evening working in Photoshop and FrontPage, running Outlook to check mail and listening to MP3s on MS Media Player all with no issues. I finished up and locked my PC for the night, leaving it on.
The next morning when I launch IE6, Outlook Express, Yahoo Chat, Norton Antivirus (which is always running) and Outlook the programs open then immediately shut down with no errors boxes. The only exception is Outlook in that it will let me read some emails but if they have any HTML content or if I try to reply to anything it closes immediately. I installed Norton SystemWorks to try and diagnose/fix the problem and that does the same thing as the others. Strangely enough, I can run Opera 7 browser and MS Messenger. It seems anything that that could be used to diagnose or communicate is being immediately shut down. I run ZoneAlarm Pro 4.x, Norton Antivirus software and have the latest definitions and ran Ad-aware, Pest Patrol and A2 Trojan scans all with no errors, viruses or malware found. I've checked the event logs but nothing obvious. I didn't install any new software, don't open emails with attachments unless they are scanned and have not made any system changes. This just happened overnight! Any help is greatly appreciated as I'm in the middle of a job search and building a website and need my PC ASAP! Also, if I need to repair an XP installation, do I just run the setup like I'm installing it and it will go into a repair option? Thanks much, Rev. Mike Johnson |

Resolved Issue
Yes, I did re-boot, warm and cold too but that did nothing. But thanks for the reply.
While searcing online I found a similar issue and the resolution corrected my problem I placed my original XP Install CD in the drive > ran Start > typed "sfc /scannow>ok" and let XP verify all it's original files. It replaced inknown files and after it completed everything launched as before. Hope this helps someone else. Rev. Mike |
