Appreciate some assistance.
When the Modem Properties, Diagnostics tab, HELP button is clicked, the Modem Troubleshoot Help file just blinks on the screen and disappears. Anyone know the name of this Help file and where it is located? Thought about replacing the file, but need some information about it. Any other suggestions about how to get the Help button to work? Thanks in advance for the help. |

You might be able to use System File Checker to restore it. When I looked in a Win98 system here at home, the first page of the troubleshooter is C:\Windows\Help\Modem.htm
It's likely that their are other helper files, so on first glance, the nearest and most likely files in the Help folder are: modem.dsc, modem.hti, modem.tsc You could try extracting those four files and see if that's all of them. Seems like there was a link somewhere, where all the Win98 troubleshooting/Help files could be downloaded and refreshed at once. If I find it, I'll send it along. If the trouble shooter still just blinks and disappears even after restoring the help file, I suppose you could repair IE, since that's what's doing the behind-the-scenes work. Best of luck . . . Thanks much for the info, Gary.
Got some guidance pointing to the file: Tshoot98.chm Will also check out the files you provided. Would have never thought about Internet Explorer. How is it tied up to this kind of issue? Have a good day!! Last edited by FZWG; 02-09-2004 at 05:04 PM. |

I believe IE is mostly doing the display work. The troubleshooters tend to bounce around from one html file to another, some of which are the .chm extension files like the Tshoot98.chm file you mention [the "c" is for "compiled" html]. Organizing them by hyperlinks works pretty well for that sort of thing, but if a file isn't where it's supposed to be, that might cause the disappearing act. Usually the main Windows troubleshooters are somewhere in the C:\Windows\Help folder. Other programs can store theirs pretty much anywhere they want.
Hope it's back working again (I still haven't found that download link, but if I do, I'll drop it by) . . . Gary |
