Disk problem
Hi there,
My OS is Windows XP. I keep getting the following message on my system after the Windows XP logo is complete. Blue screen comes on and states the following: Check file system C: The type of file system is FAT#@ One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue. Volume Serial Number is 1A16-1ADC At about 47 seconds the whole computer system shuts off and I have to restart it again and the whole thing starts all over again. If I press to exit the disk check up then it will log on. Thanks for your help Loree |

Sounds quite possible like your harddrive is going bad, or somehow the file system has gotten corrupted. What if you go to my computer, then right click on th C: drive then properties, then click the tools tab and from there you can schedule a thouough disk check the next time the PC boots..

thanks for that, I will try it.
Sounds like the hard drive because I hardly have anything on my hard drive and when I attempted to install my son't game a message came up that I don't have enough hard disk space which sounds strange to me. Where would I go to see how much disk space I have? thanks Lorella |

The same place when you right click on the C: drive then properties you see the disk usage and free space there..Also in Winxp you can right click MyComputer then manage from the pop menu then disk management from there...Does sound like eithe the drive is physically going bad or just file system and formatting has been corrupted...

If the disk clean up doesn't work, is the worse case scenario that I have to replace my hard drive. How do those things get damaged so quickly. My computer is only 2 years old?
thanks |

Right now it's hard to say if the physical disk itself is going bad or just a data problem. Your right worst case will be new harddrive, but second worst case may be reinstallation of windows, which may not be so bad. Now would be a good time to back up any data you realy need to save..Usually harddrives go bad very soon or they are good for a long time. Like anything electronic though, eventually it will fail..What kind of PC is that there you have??

Me too, but what I was wondering is what brand of PC, or is it a custom build, and as far as your windows operating system do you have the installation disk available??

As you can tell this is all kind of new to me so I am not sure what PC I have. It's not custom build. I bought the whole package together.
All I know is that it's the Intel Pentium 4. Sorry, I should know this. I have WIN XP and yes I do have the installation disk. Loree |

Just wondered if it was like an HP, Compaq, or any of the other name brand prebuilts. Really I'm just wondering if you have coverage on this PC, because if U do than that is probably the route you want to go, otherwise you may void your extended warranty/coverage if you try to do too much to fix this. Other than that, for now do the error check which will tell you that it can not be done due to windows files that are in use or something like that, but will ask you if you want it scheduled at next bootup. Do that and before that make sure you check both boxxs on that little window that say fix errors, and scan and attempt recovery of bad sectors. Post back with the results..

Hi there, now I know what you mean. Yes it's a HP. I will attempt to fix it the way you told me and then I will see into the warranty. Never even thought of it. I will post the results as soon as I have a chance to do this.
thanks for your help Loree |

Unless you bought an extended warranty you may not have any coverage although I do remember that some PC's do come with 3 year parts coverage. I do remember that those HP's have that little seal on the back that if you open the case you void the warranty. A lot of this will depend upon where you bought this PC..
