Cool Motherboard swap

I'm going to have to change the mobo in my wife's PC.
http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...highlight=8KHA

I have given up and I believe the problem is the capacitors ont the mobo as they are swollen and starting to leak. This was a problem a few years back and I do believe it has bitten me.

Anyway it has XP Pro and I plan on putting in a Asus A7N8X-X. Has anyone done a mobo swap with XP installed without reloading?

What am I in for?

Any tips?
Chas

I moved an XP Pro system from an Intel 440BX mobo running a PIII 550 mhz 13G WD IDE drive to an A7N8X deluxe AMD 2100+ with a SATA Raptor drive by simply running a full backup, including system state, to another IDE drive with an extended partition. (the extended partition doesn`t mess with drive letter assignemnts like a primary does)

Setup the new drive with the exact partitions\logical drives like the old one. Install XP Pro on the same partition\drive on the new system as the old system. Install all all hardware drivers and then install the IDE backup drive and double check that the original drive letter assignments are the same. Run a restore to the original location.

I`ve done this with XP and W2000 several times and have had very little problems. Software and apps always worked and there was a minimal of clean up. Mostly resoring network protocols and such.

I've done it a couple of times. Just go ahead and change it. With XP it's no problem. You will have to install the MB drivers then for sound, etc.

Cool

Thanks for the replies. I thought with XP it would not be a problem as it is pretty vanilla with just a mid range video card and a NIC. I will uninstall the NIC before shutting down and use the onboard NIC of new mobo.

I have one more thing to try and if it fails will order a new board today.
