format and 98
Hi,
I have aquired a panasonic cf27 toughbook laptop. I have formatted the machine because the orginal win95 was corrupt. I am using a new machine 98se install disc(original). this gives me cdrom support, it installs but always crashed about the hardware installation time. Is there anything in the dos sction of the hd after the formate that might cause the 98 install to fail. I need to get the machine running then i can get he drivers from the net later. Thanks. |

Well, to grab any info on those Panasonics from their website, you have to create an account and login. Goodness. So this is a more general guess than my usual:
Try a bootdisk from http://www.bootdisk.com & see if your luck improves. When you formatted, did you completely delete all previous partitions? When installing Win98se, did you enter Bios Setup first and set everything back to Defaults, and Disable Virus Boot Protection? If not, try those and see if they help. If that works, cool - I won't bother with that Panasonic website. If you're still having trouble, I'll go back over there for the details for your model. . . . Gary |

Thanks Gary.
There was a small partition non dos of 204mb. this has now gone. Ended up installing ME, went in ok, picked up all the drivers no problems. Getting rid of the 204mb has now produced a warning about saveing to disc not enabled. No great shakes. Thanks |

You won't need the save to disk option if you mostly run the machine with an AC plug. It helps for suspend states when on battery --- but the best practice in that case is simply to not let the battery get that low in the first place, by recharging as necessary.
I disabled that same option when I redid an older Toshiba for my 3 year old neice [hers runs on a kids table plugged into an AC outlet]. . . . Gary |
