can a file, set as read-only, be modified?
The problem i'm having pertains to the config.cfg file in Counter-Strike 1.6. For those familiar with the game please continue reading.
you can read my thread at http://steampowered.com/forums/showt...threadid=56333 As you can tell no one is having my specific problem. Read-only is supposed to keep the configuration file as read-only and without write access 9cannot be modified). Yet somehow the game allows me to save changes to the file (even after i quit the changes remain). Is this some sort of virus im not aware of on my pc? I have done a virus scan with norton and came up with nothing. Any input as to why this is happening is much appreciated. |

now that i think about it, the .cfg files are all associated with Microsoft Outlook 2003. could this be the problem? I going to uninstall all of Office 2003 and report back.

The game can change the file as it is the settings for the game. Don't worry about it.

Oh and another note from the other thread you posted. Any commands typed into the console in CS are not saved anyway.

this is not the case with the other folks at steampowered.com. They claim the chages are there only for the duration of the map, and after quitting, the changes are lost and not written to the file. But his is not the case, the files are getting written over! the read-only is supposed to stop your steam/CS client from getting slow-hacked and it gives me the joy of knowing the file won't be modified without my direct consent. again ty martin for the reply, any more ideas... |

So you are saying that when you use the CS console it is actually saving the setting. eg you are not changing the settings in the menu's ?

Well it should not change them from the console. At least not when I used to play it pre-steam. Not sure how it could be doing this. Have not got it anymore to test it.
