Hi All:
I would like to get this computer to stop asking for a password on start up. If I click cancel it goes in normally. Operating System: Win98 Your help will be very much appreciated, and thanks ahead of time ! Bill Lane P.S. I guess I should have read on down farther, I see where someone else ask about "Removing The Password", and was told that no help would be given as the computer could be stolen:-( Thanks anyway.

No you are OK in asking this,, If I remember correctly on Win98, just right click on NetworkNeighborhood, then go to properties, and right in the center of that window is a little drop down box with the logon type choices. If yours currently has client for Microsoft Windows in there, then change it to windows logon and then it will want you to reboot and if there is not currently a password It should do like you want it to then..

If it's the Windows Logon password and if you are the only person using the system you could do the following:
1) Right-click the Network Neighborhood icon on the desktop and select Properties from the drop down menu. In the dialog box that comes up select the Configuration tab. At the middle of the dialog box, you will find a drop down list with the label `Primary Login menu'. In that, please select `Windows Login' and click OK. When prompted for restart, please click No. 2) Next go to Start\settings\Control Panel and double click the Passwords icon, click the `User Profiles' tab and Select the option "All users of this computer use the same preferences and desktop settings." 3) Finally, select the Change Password tab, and then click on the `Change Windows Password' button. Enter a blank password, and click OK. Next time you start Windows, you will not get the logon dialog box. god luck |

Hi ktkendall:
That didn't work, but thanks. Hi stylin19 Everything went ok till I got to the Control Panel, there was no Password Icon, but there was a Users Icon. I clicked on it and a dialog box titled "Enable Multi-Users Settings opened. I clicked Next, and it wanted me to enter a user name. I didn't go any further as I didn't want to create another problem. I understand...if you are the only user....
do a "find" on *.pwl files and delete them. reboot. the system should startup with the windows logon. you can leave the password blank and logon. You shouldn't be prompted the next time windows starts. good luck |

Thanks stylin19
I did that, but it still kept asking. Anyway the problem is solved, I was told by another fellow to enter a password and to set Tweak IU log on automatically. Thanks again, Bill Lane |
