XP dial up Internet question
Using Windows XP home edition. If I leave the computer turn
ed on.....It will dial itself up and go on the internet. Why does this computer do this? How can I stop it from happening? So far the only way to stop it, is to disconnect the computer from the phone jack...... |

any programs that are built into xp like auto update will connect automatically, also any other soft ware you might have, e-mail ect, will also connect to do what ever it needs.
even a virous program will connect to check for any updates its the way they are set up do connect automatically, you may need to change the setting in you set-up |

To check your settings go to IE>tools>intermet options>connections tab .
Also look in your e-mail program to see if it is set to check mail every so often |

in internet tools, connections, make sure the "dial whenever a network connection is not present" isn't checked. If it is remove it and clik the "always dial my default connection" button.

Suitcase---I checked my settings.
"Never dial a connection" is checked.... Do you know why "never dial a connection" is checked? "Dial whenever a network connection is not present" is NOT checked. So I'm ok there. But "always dial my default " is NOT checked Will look forward to your reply.....thanks......George |

I'm almost positive that only one of those buttons can be checked at a time. I have had the never dial a con happen to me before but don't know why it did. Have you tried cliking the always dial my default button? If not try that it can't hurt. That's how my connection is set up.
What Bailey says is true also. Update will dial out if it's configured to do so. You can have it just let you know that updates are available and not dial I believe. Last edited by suitcase; 02-17-2004 at 12:57 AM. |

go to control panel > network connections, now click advanced on the menubar, go to dialup preferences, and check always ask me before dialing.
then you'll get a message before connecting. |

Bailey & Suitcase: I went to start/run/msconfig/ok/start up

you can find the task schedualer by cliking start, all programs, accessories, system tool, schedual tasks. I don't have any schedualed myself, I'd rather do it when I choose.

adaware and spybot they are both free and the best. others are pest patrol and system mechanic, they all are better at little things. pest partol and system mechanic are not free. stinger (made by mcafee) is a good program to check for viruses. it is not an anti-virus, it just scans to see if ones present. a good free antivirus is AVG.

xbenjix72 is correct. Adaware and Spybot search and destroy are two of the best spy programs and they're both free. Donations are accepted by spybot though. I have both and run each one couple times a month. Maximum PC just this month did a test using Norton, McAfee, and AVG virus programs. AVG caught more than the other two. It's free and I've been using it for about three years and haven't had any virus'. However, I NEVER accept forwarded email, click popups or open attachments that I don't already know what they are. Perhaps I've just been fortunate.
