Boot file messed up

k I have this laptop and the boot.ini file was changed by me to boot.old for an experiment. and now the laptop wont boot anymore , says to replace file hal.dll. please note that rom drive doesnt work and I dont have recover disk or original OS.

What OS?

Bootdisk.com
Make a bootdisk and then get into your HD and rename the boot.old file back to boot.ini. I think you'll need the OS CD to reinstall hal.dll.

thanks for heads up on bootdisk.com .
made the disk. went to C: then typed edit boot.old and then I was stuck till doobie told me to do the "save as" trick to boot.ini and voila.
