XP Installation On Laptop
Hi,
I would like to upgrade my laptop to XP Pro. Now running 98SE. Have 512 MB memory, 30 gig Hard Drive and second built in Hard Drive (10 gig) I use for back ups. I'd like to install XP Pro on the 30 gig "C" drive and use the 10 gig "D" drive disk to move my files back to the "C" drive after XP is installed. After that I'll use it for backups as before the new install. Will the upgrade XP disk be as good as the full install disk or should I spend the extra bucks on the full install disk? The original 98SE disk that came with the computer doesn't have a serial number or activation key that I am aware of. Does that make sense, I'm totally new at this and new here even though I've been a registered member for quit some time. Thanks for any comments and help. Hank |

What is the brand and model of the laptop? Just want to make sure the laptop will support XP or if you would be better off stick with 98SE.
As for the 98SE key, you only need that when you are installing win98SE. XP is the one where you need the activation code. So, to upgrade, just boot off the XP CD, format the C: drive during setup, and install. This will give you a fresh install, rather than an upgrade from 98SE where any problems with that O/S would be carried over into the upgrade. Note that if you want to save emails and bookmarks, do so, for they will be gone after a format.

Hey Thanks Force_Flow....
The brand is Sager and I believe the model is 8563. It was supposed to be their top of the line two and a half years ago when I bought it. The tech at Sager said the computer will run XP but that was about all the help he would give. After I get XP installed will I be able to read and move the files from the (10 gig) built in hard drive to XP? It shows up on the computer now as drive "D" and the CD drive shows up as drive "E". Thanks for your help. Hank |

Well, I couldn't find any info on the laptop. Sure that's the right spelling?
Yes, after XP is installed, you will still be able to read the D: drive. Just one thing I forgot to mention earlier, when you install the full-version of XP, it will ask you if you want to format and lists a few options. Select NTFS full. |

Yes, the spelling is correct. SAGER. I just got back from Best Buy with a new upgrade. With tax, the price was $216.49. Could have gotten XP Pro cheaper off the internet but couldn't wait. Really hope I can get it in by tomorrow night. When the software ask, I'll select NTFS full. Thanks again, Hank |

Now I'm really in trouble. The new install will NOT recognize the modem. I have inserted both disk that came with the computer hoping I could get a driver off of one of them but no luck. If I remember correctly the name of the modem is a "HARM 5600" and that's of course not one of the selections in the XP software. It will not work if I select standard 56000 modem.
Anybody have any suggestions for me?? I think I screwed things up by formatting the computer before I started the clean install of XP. The tech at Best Buy told me to do that. I think a big mistake. Somebody please help! Hank |

Try http://www.driverguide.com
Search for the name and model number off of the chipset on the modem. |

That's beyond my ability. I'm not a real PC Mechanic. I wouldn't know what the modem looked like even if I could get into the case. The computer is a modular type to a certain extent. Both hard drives can be removed as well as the DVD/CD drive. The key board also is easy to remove and I can get to the fan for cleaning but that's about the extent of my ability. Do you have any other suggestions? I'm fairly certain the mame of the modem is HARM 5600. Hank |

Well, I should have thought of this first thing. Don't know why it took me two days to think of the obvious Went to the Sager web site and downloaded the latest driver for my computer when using XP.
Now I have another problem. It's the same problem that "jong2k4" had in a previous post. Found the post when I ran a search. The post is on this thread and titled "Remote Procedure Call Termination." Please read that post and maybe someone can help. Hank |

Sorry about that (NoLink) , didn't cross my weak mind, next time I will!! Thanks for the help you are giving. Yes, I can connect to the internet and even downloaded 12 emails on one connection. The connections last from 3 to 10 minutes before I get the message I mentioned previously. Hank |

Yep, unfortunately it sounds like you caught a cold your 1st connection to the internet. 1st thing to do is enable the built in firewall to block port 139, then download AVG Antivirus, or use whatever package you may have. Scan and see if it comes up with anything. If it does, disable system restore and try to clean the infected files. Depending on the virus, you may need a removal tool from www.sarc.com. Also make sure to run windows update to patch the many security holes in XP.

OK guys I'm up and running. Just a fantastic web site. Hope I can give help to someone someday.
One thing that took me so long was that I simply did not believe it could be a virus. I must (but find it hard to believe) have gotten it from the Sager web site. I checked (with Norton) the CD I copied the driver to and it is clean so really don't know how I could have gotten the darn thing. A special thanks to "force_flow2002" for keeping me active here on this web site and to "oem_guy_2002" for insisting that I really did have a virus which made me go to the web site that "Confused" posted making it possible for me to kill the virus. This is exactly the outcome I wanted. Thanks!! Hank |

As a final note to this Odyssey I ran my updated version of Norton and found another virus. "W32WETCHIA.B.WORM" Norton killed this one also and now am in the process of running Norton again just to make sure. Hope this is the end... Now for a beer or two!!

What happened is this - you didn't enable the firewall on your connection before connecting to the Internet and the bad boys slipped the Blaster worm in on you before you could apply the required patch.
