Angry Fire I thought USB was supposed to be hot-swap

This is really starting to bug me. Whenever I plug in a usb device, say a webcam, nothing happens at all. When I restart the system Windows will say New Hardware Found and it will hook up and work nice and pretty. Isn't this supposed to happen whenever I plug it in? How can I make that work?

Are your ports 1.1 and your devices 2.0? I had the same problem, and would like to know a fix, too! Drove me nuts until I bought a usb 2.0 pci card. It only cost me $20 CDN, so it was worth it, and the only "fix" I found.

If the mobo is the one in your sig it is USB 2.0. I'm sure you have SP1 installed as well as the current chipset drivers?

On the general tab of System Properties it should show if SP1 is installed.

The way it should work correctly is
1) The new hardware notification should come ONLY when you insert a device into a computer for the FIRST TIME
2) After that, even with or without a reboot, there is no notification of the device - other than an icon on the systray and a brief musical beep; and the device should work.

If you are getting an old device recognized as a new one, every time you reboot, then I'd say you have some issue with the USB and/or drivers for the device.

devices will still work weather it is a 1.1 or a 2.0 device. just one would not work at the faster speed of the 2.0.

Edit: I have SP1 as well as all of the updates for XP pro installed. Everything works fine, it's just that when I attach a USB device I have to reboot before windows sees it. What can I do about this?
