Need to get around stalled CHKDSK
Running XP Home, SP1. Previously tried to run a CHKDSK on my slave drive, was told that it would be scheduled for next boot (for reasons I'm not sure about). When I rebooted, the CHKDSK did in fact start running on my second drive. However, it got to 65% complete then stalled. I rebooted again, same issue. I finally unplugged the drive to allow a boot of my system. I then took a look at "scheduled tasks" ... the only things there were scheduled virus scanning and the like, no CHKDSK scheduled. I shut down, hooked the slave drive back up and rebooted again. Once again the auto-CHKDSK started and stalled at 65%.
HOW CAN I GET AROUND THE AUTO-CHKDSK? I was planning to reformat the drive anyway, just can't get booted with it installed. Any help appreciated. Thanks. |

Try running the scan in safe mode or.....
This setting controls the time delay before running Autochk or whether it is run at all. This is just a tempory fix to stop it running. Just change the reg value to zero Registry Settings System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager] Value Name: AutoChkTimeOut Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value) Value Data: Time in Seconds or 0 to disable (default = 10) |

when the chkdsk starts to run, it gives you 10-15 seconds (I forget exactly how long) to press any key to abort the chkdsk.

If you are gonna reformat it anyway, why don't you just boot it with any old bootfloppy and use Delpart on it?
http://www.russelltexas.com/delpart.htm If it's stalling trying to run chkdsk, the drive may have some issues and it might be wise to run manufacturer's diags on it and maybe even zero fill it before reusing it. |
