Xp Installation Help!!!

Well, my friends computer had windows ME on it, and i decided to be a good friend and put XP pro on it - and i did, and theyre computer was working fine for about a week - until his dad started messing around with stuff where he doesnt belong, so then the computer always locked up randomly and was slow as hell. If only he could have waited to mess with it until i installed the updates...well anyways, i thought i just could install xp pro back over it using new installation - well i did that - and now its asking for the product key - and i typed in the same key i always used, and it wont work! Nor will any other key on the internet that i find. Can someone please help me out with formatting this and putting another operating system on it or something! Help!

was the installation done with a store bought upgrade cd or a copy of a xp cd?
you could try to do a repaire install.
