Blocking programs

I run a server (Windows 2000). Is it possible to block certain users from using certain programs within windows? My two main concerns are Instant messaging programs and internet explorer.

While I don't know much about anything (lol) I would recomend blocking the ports the im programs use instead of just the program. They could always install another program, like trillian, instead of aim but they still use the same ports, i believe. I believe you can block the programs too, but I'll let someone else who knows more about that to give you a definitive answer. Good Luck!

Actually, the Trillian issue wouldn't be a problem, since I'm the only one with admin rights. So if they tried to install Trillian, it would fail. But the blocking ports idea has merit, how is that done? I've used a router to open ports but not block them. By the way, never assume you know nothing . What's nothing to you can be something to somebody else .

Take the shortcuts off their desktops and start menus - this will stop the casual users. You would probably have to play with the policy editor to do anything more secure.
