I was able to get it for a super low price. I can also take advantage of the Hyper-threading capability of my mobo and P4 very easy.
Otherwise, I still use W2K on this pc.

WinXP Pro because it gives seemless network integration. Also, because that just happened to come with this laptop .

Pro because it was only $10 more. Plus Home sounds like a retirement home (jk)

I have Home on 3 desktops and 1 laptop. 2 came with it and 2 I built and selected Home over Pro based on price and functional differences. Couldn't justify the extra $ for things I wouldn't use. I think some people just buy Pro because they want to be thought of as a "Professional".

Pro. Why have Home, when you can get Pro?
But I still prefer Mandrake 9.2.

I think with the continued popularity of hyperthreaded P4's I would pretty much only recommend the Pro edition for Intel users. I personally need it as my home network is an NT Domain, plus one of the machines is a Dual setup. I will add that my experience with Home edition simple file sharing has not been good to say the least, so I would use pro regardless wether or not the need was there.

When getting an OS, I don't like to get crippled from the beginning; better CPU support (HT), better network and security features.

You do NOT need Pro for hyperthreading, it is supported in XP Home... if you PHYSICALLY have two processors, then you need Pro as Home only supports ONE physical processor.

I firmly believe in an above comment that a lot of users get Pro because it says "Professional"... so many people ask for it, then I ask why they need Pro... and get answers like above... "cuz it's better"....then after checking how they're using it.. ya.. it's better cuz I'm making more money off them.

Fair enough, I wasn't purposely trying to disagree with you, I had no idea Home edition supported Hyperthreading. Sorry.

I still don't like simple file sharing though, and I am on a domain, so my choice was a simple one.

I like XP pro for it's extra networking features and features to host your own web server.

Okay then I will justify my answer.

1. Only Pro has remote desktop, something I use for troubleshooting.

2. Easier to network. Anything easier is something that I approve of.

3. The Encrypting File System (EFS), found in Windows XP Professional but not Windows XP Home Edition, allows you to encrypt your files and folders for added security of sensitive data against theft or hackers. Restricted File Access, also found only in Professional, allows you to restrict access to selected files, applications, and other resources.

4. Windows XP Professional provides more robust options for backing up and restoring data than Home Edition.

5. And of course multi-proc support and IIS support, while not needed now, may be needed by me in the future, so I have Pro now so I don't have to buy it later on and upgrade.

Home - Because I couldn't justify spending the money for the extra features that I wouldn't use. I also searched pcmechanic and found a thread similar to this one and it helped me make the right decision!

No offense.. but some of that can be shot down

1) I use remote assistance with customers all the time

2) Lets see... I plug in my XP Home, it finds my ME machine, network printers, and hooked into my Linux with a little config on the Linux end? Does Pro do it easier than turning the system on?

3) Home has all the networking security options of Pro, but I'll give you this that they are easier in the sense that to get all the goodies that Pro has, you have to do it from safe mode.

4) I don't use the backup options of Home or Pro, Ghost all the way.

5) Dual processor as I see it is on the way out for any kind of home use... pretty much just for the high end server market these days, so it's really a waste for something that you "might" (read: never) use. Same goes for IIS, will all the security holes that everyone talks about IIS, why would you use it? So again, in my eyes, a waste of money for something that just isn't worth it.

******6) You missed the most important one... if you NEED DOMAIN SUPPORT, then YES, you NEED Pro!

Not saying you have to accept these arguments, they're just my stance on it. I don't need Pro just to sound good when Home does the job just fine.

Realistically, I know why a lot of people use Pro, but that topic is not to be discussed.
