installing XP?

haven't got bits for my new computer yet but i want to get it up and running as soon as possible when i do.

how do you install WinXP, or more specifically, can you just set the CD-ROM to Primary Boot Device and not have to use a boot disk to format and partition the HDD. The BYOPC guide gives [feeble] instructions on using a boot disk but is this necessary?

the Mobo will be ASUS P4P800, HDD will be Maxtor 6Y120MO, and its XP pro

Just place the XP cd in the drive and it will set it all up for you. No need for boot disks.

Yep, just go into BIOS and change the first boot device to the CD-ROM, put the WinXP CD in the drive, Save and Exit the BIOS and the system will reboot to the WinXP CD and the installer will take over. Follow the instructions.

Oh, when building your computer (especially if it's your first), don't rush.

ah thankyou. it seems so much more simple than mucking around with fdisk and stuff.

are there options to choose from when installing XP, where you have to choose what utilities you want to have? will these be covered in the manual of the OEM version of XP?

EDIT: what about CD-ROM drivers?

You don't need them since they're on the bootable cd.

on this webpage it assumes that you have a "blank, frechly partitioned and formatted hard disk." so do i actually need to format or partition the hard disk? sorry for the strings of questions but there seem to be so many contradicting sources out there...

No, that's wrong. If you're going to install WinXP directly from the CD (the only way to go) the hard drive doesn't need to be partitioned and formatted already...that'll all be done during the WinXP installation process.

You don't even mess with the startup floppies.

The XP CDROM has a version of FDISK that can set up new partitions on a hard drive. It also has utilities to format the drive. It goes to this menu on a new install.
