you should probably be a little bit more specific. Are you using dial up or a broadband service?

installing win XP loosing internet? I don't get what are you saying. technical terms-yes, but you just need to configure your internet options to get back online. Thats all. Internet does not cutt off just because you've downloaded something.

If your PC is running slow try downloading Spy-Bot Search and Destroy and running a scan. Also, do a virus scan using you virus software. If you don't have a virus program then download the free AVG Anti Virus. If you are still having problems then defragment you hard drive. How much space is left on your hard drive?

Anything that is on the same partition, YES you will loose. But all you will have to do is reinstall those programs. If, on the other hand, you have ONLY Windows on that partition, and everything else on another partition, then no you won't loose it. You can reinstall Windows over your existing Windows, like a repair install. Unless you go with a Zero-Write utility which will write zeros over where your Windows used to be. Then you will loose your desktop icons. And you might also have to reinstall most or all of your programs over again. The Zero-Write utility will cause you to loose the shared files with your other programs and make them un-useable unless you reinstall the programs to regain your shared files for the shortcuts.

If I had AOL I would lose it on purpose. No you will not lose Inernet Explorer because it is part of Windows. You would have to install AOL again but if there is any way you can avoid installing AOL I would not do it. It is despised by many.

Posts like this are stupid and useless. Don't make fun of people, that's not what this forum is for. If you can't help, shut up!

Hi Ho: You are on thin ice too, instead of bashing AOL, you should explain how to check your AOL mail at www.aol.com so you don't *have* to install the AOL software.

JohnRobert: If you decide to wipe the drive and start all over, yes, you will lose all files. However, Windows XP comes with Internet Explorer and you should be back on the Internet in a jiffy. It would be worth a try doing a thorough virus and spyware scan before giving up, you might want to look through the threads in the System Security and Privacy forum.

Folks, please don't be vigilantes - that's what the "report this post to a moderator" link is for, let us do our job as Dok has already said. Thank you.

I'm moving this thread to the Windows XP forum, that's a lot more appropriate place for it than in General Hardware.

I'm sorry. I did not know you could check email at aol.com. I recommended not installing AOL because I have several friends who have had serious problems with it. I didn't mean to bash.

I have problems with AOL software on almost a daily basis with my customers, but they are the largest ISP in the world so we have to deal with it. They do in fact have a Web mail interface like most other ISP's these days, and I have quite a few customers on Comcast etc. broadband (and myself, as a matter of fact) that have AOL accounts and use the Web to check their mail. They are saving money by using the AOL "minimum use" account, which is $4.95 a month for 3 hours usage - and using the Web interface does NOT count against those 3 hours. The clock only starts if you use the AOL software.
