XP Upgrade Boot Question.....

My girl bought a version of Windows XP Home($99) for me as a suprise but it was the upgrade version. (I had 98) So I decided to try it. When I ran it, it asked for a upgrade installation or full installation so I picked full. I thought I could put it on my C: partition and it would write over 98, but it wouldn't let me, it said you can't have 2 operating systems on the same partition. So I decided to put it on D:. Now everything is OK but when starting up it askes me to choose either XP or Windows to start. Could I now format the C: drive so it only starts XP and use that space as Storage or are there file in the old Windows folder that XP Needs? And if I can format C: does it matter that XP is on the D: drive?

Thanks in Advance.
Tony

Well, if you choose full instead of upgrade, then of course it won't upgrade 98 to XP as you wanted a full installation and not an upgrade. All you needed to do if you wanted to upgrade is to choose "upgrade" instead of full . . .

The best thing is to wipe the hard drive and do a clean installation anyway, but I do believe that if you format C: WinXP will start from D:, but I'm not 100% sure.

No, if you wipe C you will wipe the bootloader.

You can do a clean install with the upgrade CD if you have your 98 CD available. When it does the compliance check, just pop the XP cd out and put the 98 CD in, it will see it and press on, put the XP cd back in.

that's what I thought. If I you can do a full install, then why would anyone buy the $199 version of XP when they could get the version I have (upgrade $99)? Does It need a previous version's disk to do the Full Install?

I'll try wiping the c: drive, what the heck, if it fails I'll just clear the drives and do a Clean install.

Thanks RJ

Must have been writing when you posted glc, thanks.

So maybe it's time to clean the drives and do the clean install.

That's the best way. Let it wipe the hard drive, choose NTFS for the file system. XP will format and partition for you. At some point it will ask you to put in your 98 disk to verify that you quailfy for an upgrade. After that you should be OK.

"then why would anyone buy the $199 version of XP when they could get the version I have (upgrade $99)? Does It need a previous version's disk to do the Full Install?" in both cases you will need to have a full version of a qualifying OS to upgrade from. By qualifying, I mean that ownership of Win 3.1 and I think Win 95 did not qualify you to use an upgrade XP disk.

With the upgrade install, the OS overwrites the exisiting one, with the full install it wipes the hard drive and then does the install- since there is now no OS to check that you qualify - at some point it asks you to insert the install disk for the old OS, has a quick look and then asks for the XP disk back and finishes the install.

DO NOT LOSE THE OLD OS DISK - if you do then if you have a need to do another install you will be unable to. This is why most people buy an OEM copy of XP- it is the same price as the retail upgrade, Of course you lose the fancy box and the ability to do an upgrade install - but full installs are safer and cleaner anyway and you can sell/give/lose the old disk with no worries.

We buy the OEM version for about $93.00 (Home) or $143.000 (Pro) and don't have to worry about having to keep a qualifying version such as WIN98 to do a clean install.
